There are two airports in Istanbul; one on the European side (Ataturk Airport, IST), the other on the Asian side (Sabiha Gokcen Airport, SAW) of the city. We would suggest flying to Ataturk as it is better linked to public transport and closer to the Old City and main tourist attractions.

WARNING! The traffic in Istanbul is notoriously busy. If you can, try to avoid rush hour (especially on a Friday, 5-7pm)...or take the Metro.

You can fly direct to Istanbul from London, Manchester, and Birmingham:

London Heathrow - Turkish Airlines, British Airways

London Gatwick - Turkish Airlines, British Airways

London Stansted - Pegasus Airlines

London Luton - AtlasJet, EasyJet

Manchester - Turkish Airlines

Birmingham - Turkish Airlines

We would recommend using www.skyscanner.net and booking as far in advance as possible.

Flights to Istanbul

Moving on from the airport

Ataturk:

Taxi - approx. 40 liras to the Old City

Coach - Havas buses will stop in Taksim

Metro/MetroBus - will take you  to a number of destinations

Sabiha Gokcen:

Taxi - approx. 80 liras to the Old City

Visas

You will require a visa for Turkey. As of April 2014 you are required to purchase an electronic visa before leaving the UK for a cost of $20. You can buy this at the airport, however, there could be a long wait.
